American Airlines (AA) resumes Chicago (ORD) - Columbia (CAE) service
American Airlines will officially resume nonstop service between Chicago and Columbia on May 21, 2026, restoring another important link in the carrier’s U.S. domestic network. The return of this route not only expands travel options for passengers, but also strengthens connectivity between the dynamic Midwest and the administrative capital of South Carolina.
The route creates a meaningful air bridge between one of the United States’ leading centers for business, finance and aviation connectivity and Columbia, a city gaining prominence for its roles in education, government and regional services. For American Airlines, the relaunch represents a strategic step in reinforcing its presence in Chicago, while giving travelers from Columbia more convenient access to the airline’s extensive network and those of its Oneworld partners. As domestic demand continues to recover and fragment across niche markets, the restoration of nonstop service also shortens total journey times compared with connecting itineraries, creating a notable competitive advantage over United Airlines.
According to the operating schedule, the airline will offer up to two daily round trips on most days of the week, with some day-specific adjustments during the initial launch period. The entire route will be operated by Embraer 170 regional jets, a type well suited to markets with steady demand and a premium on operational flexibility.
Chicago is a city of striking skylines, where modern architecture, public art and urban energy come together along the shores of Lake Michigan. From its vibrant downtown core to world-class museums and an iconic culinary scene, the city offers an experience that feels both grand and welcoming. It is also one of North America’s most important aviation gateways, ideal for both business travel and leisure exploration.
Columbia offers a different rhythm: warm, green and deeply rooted in the character of the American South. The city stands out for its universities, riverside parks and richly layered local culture, making it well suited to trips that combine business and leisure. From here, travelers can also easily extend their journeys to charming towns and the distinctive natural landscapes of South Carolina.
