Technical Issue DetailsOn April 30, 2026, United Airlines flight UA1631, a Boeing 737-900 (registration N61882) flying from Newark Liberty to Las Vegas at FL320, was en route approximately 150 nautical miles north of Chicago. The flight crew decided to divert to Chicago O'Hare after noticing an unusual, unidentified smell in the rear section of the passenger cabin. The aircraft performed a safe landing on O'Hare's runway 28R roughly 30 minutes after the decision to divert was made.
Outcome / HandlingThe airline confirmed that the diversion was prompted by an odd odor at the back of the cabin. Passengers were transferred to a replacement Boeing 737-900 (registration N69838) which took them to Las Vegas with a delay of approximately 4.5 hours. The original aircraft remained on the ground in Chicago for maintenance and returned to commercial service approximately 24.5 hours later.
