Technical Issue DetailsWhile cruising at an altitude of 8,900 meters (FL291) near Wuzhou (about 130nm west of Guangzhou), the aircraft suddenly entered a rapid descent, losing altitude precipitously until it impacted mountainous terrain. Contact was lost at 14:15 local time.
Outcome / HandlingSearch and rescue operations immediately reached the crash site in Wuzhou but found no survivors. All 123 passengers and 9 crew members on board perished in the crash.
Current StatusThe Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) opened an official investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) appointed an accredited representative to join the investigation alongside Boeing and engine manufacturer CFM.
