Technical Issue Details
•A Bombardier DHC-8-311 (ZK-NEF) was performing flight NZ8190 from Timaru (TIU) to Wellington (WLG) with 39 occupants on board.
•While accelerating for takeoff on runway 02, the crew aborted the takeoff at high speed (above 100 knots) due to a flock of birds near the flight path.
•The aircraft overran the runway end and came to a stop with the nose gear approximately 5 meters onto soft ground.
Outcome / Handling
•No injuries were reported among the 36 passengers and 3 crew members on board.
•The aircraft sustained no significant damage from the overrun.
Current Status
•The final investigation report concluded that the incident resulted from a breakdown in crew resource management and cockpit communication during a critical flight phase.
•The First Officer reduced the rate of rotation to avoid the birds but intended to continue the takeoff. The Captain mistook this action as a decision to abort and initiated emergency braking.
•The take-off rejection occurred above the maximum decision speed due to the lack of shared understanding between the crew members.
