Technical Issue DetailsDuring takeoff from Ahmedabad's runway 23, Air India flight AI-171 (a Boeing 787-8, registration VT-ANB, bound for London Gatwick) suffered a critical engine failure. The flight crew declared a Mayday, reporting a total loss of thrust and an inability to gain altitude. Shortly thereafter, the aircraft lost height and crashed into a medical college building in the Meghaninagar suburb, about 0.9 nautical miles past the end of the runway.
Outcome / HandlingThe crash resulted in a massive fire and widespread destruction. Out of the 242 occupants on board, 241 perished, leaving only one survivor. Additionally, the crash caused 19 fatalities and numerous injuries among people on the ground as the wreckage scattered over 200 meters.
Current StatusCivil aviation safety authorities and rescue teams arrived at the crash site immediately. An official investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the sudden power loss.
