Technical Issue Details
•A UPS Boeing 747-8F (N624UP) performing cargo flight 5X110 from Anchorage (ANC) to Tokyo Narita (NRT) was en route at FL380 over the Bering Sea.
•The flight crew detected an unusual odour and fumes suspected to originate from hazardous cargo, causing crew members to experience toxic symptoms.
Outcome / Handling
•The flight crew decided to turn back and initiate an emergency landing back at Anchorage (ANC).
•The aircraft landed safely on runway 15 approximately 3 hours and 10 minutes after takeoff.
•All crew members were transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation and care.
Current Status
•Emergency services and hazmat teams inspected the aircraft and ventilated it by opening all cargo doors.
