Technical Issue Details
•A PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ-900LR (N646NN) operating on behalf of American Airlines for flight AA5478 from Philadelphia (PHL) to Memphis (MEM) was climbing out of runway 27L.
•The flight crew encountered a landing gear issue during climb, halted the climb at FL050, and declared an emergency.
•While entering a holding pattern, visual observation confirmed that the nose landing gear was extended but rotated sideways by approximately 90 degrees.
Outcome / Handling
•The crew positioned the aircraft for an approach to runway 27L, with the tower confirming that the landing gear appeared to be down on short final.
