Technical Issue Details
Airbus A220-300 (9A-CAN) was accelerating for takeoff on runway 23 at Split Airport.
The incident occurred on flight OU412 bound for Frankfurt International Airport.
Upon reaching a speed of approximately 131 knots (243 km/h), the aircraft suddenly veered sharply to the left due to a loss of directional control.
The flight crew initiated a high-speed rejected takeoff, but the aircraft ran off the paved surface of the runway into the adjacent grass.
Outcome / Handling
The aircraft struck runway edge lights and at least one vertical threshold marker sign, causing minor damage to the left engine (no. 1 engine cowling/intake lip).
Reports also indicated that the aircraft lost one of the wheels on its landing gear.
No injuries were reported among the passengers or crew members.
All 130 passengers and 5 crew members disembarked safely via stairs and were taken to the terminal.
The scheduled flight to Frankfurt was subsequently cancelled.
Current Status
Split Airport temporarily suspended runway operations while emergency services towed the aircraft and inspected the runway.
The Croatian Air, Maritime and Railway Accident Investigation Agency (AIN) assumed jurisdiction and launched a formal investigation.
The flight recorders (FDR and CVR) have been recovered for detailed analysis.
The aircraft is currently grounded at Split for technical inspection and investigation.
