Technical Issue Details
Boeing 737-8HG (VT-AXR) was lining up for a nighttime takeoff on runway 26L from taxiway E7.
The incident occurred on flight IX712 bound for Kannur International Airport.
The flight crew mistakenly aligned the aircraft with the right-hand runway edge lights instead of the centerline.
During the takeoff roll, the aircraft struck and destroyed several edge lights, resulting in a loud bang and a master caution warning in the cockpit.
Outcome / Handling
The crew rejected the takeoff and brought the aircraft to a stop on the runway.
The aircraft was disabled on the runway with a flat tire, a hydraulic leak in System A, and potential engine damage from debris ingestion.
All passengers and crew members disembarked safely onto the runway and were transported back to the terminal.
No injuries were reported.
Current Status
The Oman Transport Safety Bureau (OTSB) has officially classified the event as an accident and launched a formal investigation.
An accredited representative from India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is participating in the OTSB-led probe.
Both flight deck crew members have been derostered pending the outcome of the investigation.
The aircraft remains grounded at Muscat since the incident.
