Technical Issue Details
The Airbus A321-271NX (N646FR) struck a person on the runway during its takeoff roll at Denver International Airport (DEN).
The accident occurred on flight F94345 bound for Los Angeles (LAX) on runway 17L.
The individual scaled the perimeter fence and walked onto the active runway approximately two minutes prior to the collision.
The US Transport Secretary reported that the trespasser breached airport security, deliberately scaled the perimeter fence, and ran onto the runway while the aircraft was already moving at high speed.
Outcome / Handling
The flight crew initiated an emergency rejected takeoff at approximately 120 knots.
The impact caused a right-hand engine (PW1133G) fire and smoke entered the passenger cabin.
The aircraft came to a stop on the runway, and an emergency evacuation was executed using the slides.
Airport fire crews responded and promptly extinguished the engine fire.
Current Status
The pedestrian on the runway was fatally injured.
No fatalities occurred among the 231 passengers and crew members on board, though 12 passengers sustained minor injuries during the evacuation, with five of them taken to hospitals.
Security inspections confirmed the airport perimeter fence was fully intact, despite initial reports suggesting a possible gap on the east side.
