Technical Issue Details
A China Eastern Airlines Airbus A350-900 (B-324W) performing flight MU5406 from Chengdu to Shanghai experienced multiple technical warnings during takeoff and climb, starting with a NAV IR3 system fault.
After the flight crew deactivated the faulty IR3 system, the aircraft's ECAM displayed subsequent warnings indicating issues with the autobrake and green/yellow hydraulic brake accumulators.
Upon landing and exiting the runway, a total brake system failure warning was triggered while the aircraft was taxiing toward its parking stand.
Outcome / Handling
In response to the sudden brake loss, the flight crew applied maximum reverse thrust to stop the aircraft.
Although the aircraft briefly stopped, it rolled backward due to the reverse thrust and then forward again when thrust was set to idle.
Despite repeated attempts to use reverse thrust to control the aircraft, the left wing and the left-hand Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engine collided with the passenger boarding bridge multiple times.
No injuries were reported among passengers, crew members, or ground personnel.
Current Status
The aircraft sustained structural damage to its left wing and engine, and was grounded for inspection and repairs.
The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) launched a formal technical investigation to determine the root cause of the brake failure.
