Technical Issue Details
•The Republic Airways Embraer ERJ-175 (N133HQ) was operating flight AA4464 on behalf of American Airlines from Indianapolis (IND) to New York (JFK).
•The Jazz Embraer ERJ-175 (C-FEJP) was operating flight AC8554 on behalf of Air Canada from Toronto (YYZ) to New York (JFK).
•While AA4464 was on approach to runway 31L, it overshot the extended runway centerline and descended through the altitude of AC8554, which was on final approach to runway 31R.
•The separation between the two aircraft reduced to 0 feet vertically at 1 nautical mile horizontally, and 200 feet vertically at 0.7 nautical miles horizontally.
Outcome / Handling
•Air Traffic Control (ATC) attempted to instruct AC8554 to climb to 3,000 feet upon recognizing the conflict.
•Both aircraft received Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) Resolution Advisories (RAs) and complied.
•Both aircraft initiated a go-around, repositioned, and landed safely on parallel runways 31L and 31R about 12 minutes later.
Current Status
•The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has initiated an investigation into the occurrence.
•No damage to the aircraft or injuries to passengers were reported.
