Technical Issue Details
The Boeing 737-800 (B-1791) was operating flight MU5735 from Kunming (KMG) to Guangzhou (CAN) carrying 123 passengers and 9 crew members.
While enroute at 8,900 meters (FL291), approximately 130 nautical miles west of Guangzhou and nearing the top of descent, the aircraft suddenly entered a rapid loss of altitude.
Outcome / Handling
The aircraft impacted mountainous terrain in the Wuzhou region (about 119 nautical miles west of Guangzhou).
Search and rescue operations quickly deployed to the crash site but found no survivors among the 132 occupants.
Current Status
The China's Civil Aviation Administration (CAAC) launched an official investigation into the disaster.
The NTSB, Boeing, and engine manufacturer CFM joined the investigation team.
This crash ended China's nearly 12-year national aviation safety record.
